Wokingham Borough Council has a hotline for residents to report grafitti. Residents can have the vandalism removed from their property or covered free of charge by the Council's street cleansing contractor (call 0118 974 6307). Businesses will be given advice and contact details of a suitable contractor. The removal of graffiti can involve different methods depending on the material used and the surface to which it is applied and householders will be required to sign a disclaimer. Also the Waste Team arranges for removal of rubbish dumped on roads, verges and footways. Telephone 0118 974 6340.

Local residents are being asked to report anyone they suspect of dumping any kind of rubbish to either the Environment Agency on (01276) 454300 or the council on (0118) 974 6307 or 6339. Fly-tipping is an offence and anyone caught dumping rubbish illegally can be prosecuted and subject to a fine of up to £20,000 or six months' imprisonment.

Items Taken to Recycling Banks

Newspaper/magazines, put in the banks are taken to Aylesford in Kent where they are recycled into newsprint. The quality is vital to achieve a good end product. We recycle about 700 tonnes per annum.

Green/Clear/Brown Glass, This is collected separately and taken to Berrymans in Dagenham. The different colours are marketed through varying routes. Clear and brown are sought after in this country. Green is more difficult and tends to be transported back to wine making regions. However, it is all recycled back into new glass bottles and jars. Last year we recycled over 2,000 tonnes.

Textiles, We have a contract with The Salvation Army to collect these materials. They are taken to Northampton where they are sorted in different grades. Some goes for reuse to East and West Africa, some is used for industrial wipers and some natural fibres are pulled and respun into new cloth. We collect about 100 tonnes per annum.

Other: Shoes and Books, These are taken for reuse.

Kerbside Recycling - Items Put in the Black Boxes

Newspaper/Cardboard, This kerbside material is collected in split bodied refuse vehicles. This material is taken direct to Taplow Paper Mill near Maidenhead where it is turned into corrugated cardboard product (the wavy bit in the middle). This is a poor quality product but is ideal for this use. This is our biggest single material at 5,000 tonnes per annum.

Cans/Plastic Bottles, These are collected in the same split vehicle and are taken to Onyx at Maidenhead for sorting. The aluminium and steel cans are separated from the plastic bottles. They are taken away to make new feed stock. The plastic bottles are then subdivided by hand. There are 2 types of plastic collected. The first is PET (polyethylene teraphalate), fizzy drinks bottles. These are cleaned and flaked and are turned into a polyester fibre for high quality fleeces. The second type of plastic is HDPE (high density polyethylene), bleach, softener, shampoo, washing up liquid, milk containers (plastic) and washing liquid. These bottles are also washed and flaked but are remade into: dustbins, bowls, buckets, composters and yes the black boxes. This tonnage is quite small about 800 tonnes per annum but the volume is very high.

In addition to general household waste you can also recycle engine oil and car batteries at these sites.

Both sites are open from 8.00am - 6.00pm September to April; 8.00am - 8.00pm April to September; Closed Christmas Day.

Even though our neighbouring councils (Bracknell Forest and Reading) operate the sites on Wokinghams behalf. Wokingham pays just under 45% of the costs of Longshot, Bracknell and 36% of the Island road site in Reading.

During the Berkshire years up to 1998, most of the rubbish taken to the civic amenity site was landfilled and less than 5% recycled. This year it is estimated that Wokingham residents will take a staggering 16,000 tonnes of rubbish to the sites.

Reading are now achieving 30% recycling at Island Road, and Bracknell Forest are making some progress at Longshot Lane. However, we all need to do better to reduce the amount of rubbish we make, reduce our trips to the sites and recycle more of what we do take.

As with most recycling though, we need your help and co-operation to achieve this. The main areas are:
